Graduation Walk for Des Moines Public Schools
This event will take place on Saturday, October 19. Research shows that poor attendance in the first month of school can predict chronic absence for the entire school year. During this event, volunteers will visit the homes of DMPS students that have missed 5 or more days since school started in August. We believe that this focus will help us intervene early in the school year to support students towards improved attendance in school so they thrive academically.
There is still a huge need for volunteers. Please find the attached flyer or you can read more information and sign-up online: https://www.unitedwaydm.org/graduation-walk
Volunteers are also needed for the Book Buddy program. Book Buddy is a weekly (or bi-weekly) commitment to one-on-one reading with four-year-old students at our partnering preschools around the metro. We have opportunities for available on Tuesdays or Thursdays in Perry, Wednesdays or Thursdays at Conmigo (828 Scott Ave.), and Fridays at Capitol Park (800 E. 12th St.).
